In early twentieth-century London, the companies that ran the public transit systems that is, the trains, trams, and trolleybuses carrying people to and fro around the city came up with a brilliant plan to attract riders. They hired artists to design posters spotlighting the parks, landmarks, and other neat places riders could reach on public transit. One popular destination was London Zoo, which opened in 1828 on the edge of Regent s Park. It was the world s first zoo to be aimed primarily at scientific study of the animals. Many beautiful posters featuring the zoo were produced, each one telling potential visitors which transit line would take them there. In this colouring book you will find eighteen of these posters produced by a number of artists some well known, others not.
When you colour in the pictures, you can try to copy the original colours and style, or you might decide to use your own.
The last pages of the book are blank so you can draw and colour in your own posters. If you live by a zoo, you might try drawing a picture that will make people want to go there. If you don t live by a zoo, perhaps you d like to draw a poster of your favourite animal.
